$$f$$-electron states of heavy-fermion superconductor NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and rare-earth- and actinide-based isostructural compounds

Good correspondence of the $$LS$$ and $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme can be realized in the $$f$$-electron states of the heavy-fermion superconductor NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and the isostructural family. The rare-earth and actinide elements are under a common strong uniaxial point charge potential with tetragonal point symmetry $$D_{4h}$$. The systematic development of the $$f$$-electron states can be understood in the $$LS$$ coupling scheme of $$^nf$$ configuration (the number of $$f$$ electrons $$nleq6$$). We can find the corresponding states in $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme with three $$f$$-orbitals $$Gamma_7^{rm; i}, Gamma_7^{rm; ii}$$, and $$Gamma_6$$ determined from CePd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ with $$^1f$$ configuration.

Development of the versatile reactor analysis code system, MARBLE2

The second version of the versatile reactor analysis code system, MARBLE2, has been developed. A lot of new functions have been added inMARBLE2 by using the base technology developed in the first version (MARBLE1). Introducing the remaining functions of the conventional code system (JOINT-FR and SAGEP-FR), MARBLE2 enables one to execute almost all analysis functions of the conventional code system with the unified user interfaces of its subsystem, SCHEME. In particular, the sensitivity analysis functionality is available in MARBLE2. On the other hand, new built-in solvers have been developed, and existing ones have been upgraded. Furthermore, some other analysis codes and libraries developed in JAEA have been consolidated and prepared in SCHEME. In addition, several analysis codes developed in the other institutes have been additionally introduced as plug-in solvers. Consequently, $$gamma$$-ray transport calculation and heating evaluation become available. As for another subsystem, ORPHEUS, various functionality updates and speed-up techniques have been applied based on user experience of MARBLE1 to enhance its usability.

Multipole ordering in $$f$$-electron systems

In order to investigate multipole ordering in $$f$$-electron systems from a microscopic viewpoint, we study the so-called $$Gamma_8$$ models on three kinds of lattices, simple cubic (sc), bcc, and fcc, based on a $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme with $$f$$-electron hopping integrals through $$(ffsigma)$$ bonding. From the $$Gamma_8$$ model, we derive an effective model for each lattice structure by using the second-order perturbation theory with respect to $$(ffsigma)$$. By further applying mean-field theory to the effective model, we find a $$Gamma_{3g}$$ antiferro-quadrupole transition for the sc lattice, a $$Gamma_{2u}$$ antiferro-octupole transition for the bcc lattice, and a longitudinal triple-$$q$$ $$Gamma_{5u}$$ octupole transition for the fcc lattice.

We investigate microscopic aspects of multipole ordering in $$f$$-electron systems with emphasis on the effect of lattice structure. For the purpose, we construct $$f$$-electron models on three kinds of lattices, simple cubic (sc), bcc, and fcc, in a tight-binding approximation on the basis of a $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme. Then, an effective model is derived in the strong-coupling limit for each lattice with the use of second-order perturbation theory with respect to $$(ffsigma)$$. By applying mean-field theory to such effective models, we find multipole ordered states depending on the lattice structure. For the sc lattice, a $$Gamma_{3g}$$ antiferro-quadrupole transition occurs at a finite temperature and at further lowering temperature, we find another transition to a ferromagnetic state. For the bcc lattice, a $$Gamma_{2u}$$ antiferro-octupole ordering occurs first, and then, a ferromagnetic phase transition follows it. Finally, for the fcc lattice, we find a single phase transition to the longitudinal triple-$$q$$ $$Gamma_{5u}$$ octupole ordering.

Analysis of $$f$$-$$p$$ model for octupole ordering in NpO$$_2$$

In order to examine the origin of octupole ordering in NpO$$_2$$, we propose a microscopic model constituted of neptunium $$5f$$ and oxygen $$2p$$ orbitals. To study multipole ordering, we derive effective multipole interactions from the $$f$$-$$p$$ model by using the fourth-order perturbation theory in terms of $$p$$-$$f$$ hopping integrals. Analyzing the effective model numerically, we find a tendency toward $$Gamma_{5u}$$ antiferro-octupole ordering.

$$beta$$-decay half-lives of new neutron-rich rare-earth isotopes $$^{159}$$Pm, $$^{162}$$Sm, and $$^{166}$$Gd

The new neutron-rich raer-earth isotopes $$^{159}$$Pm, $$^{162}$$Sm, and $$^{166}$$Gd produced in the proton-induced fission of 238U were identified using the JAERI on-line isotope separator (JAERI-ISOL) coupled to a gas-jet transport sysetm. The half-lives of $$^{159}$$Pm, $$^{162}$$Sm, and $$^{166}$$Gd were determined to be 1.5$$pm$$0.2s, 2.4$$pm$$0.5s, and 4.8$$pm$$1.0s, respectively. The partial decay scheme of $$^{166}$$Gd wes constructed for $$gamma$$-$$gamma$$ coincidence data. The improved half-life values of 25.6$$pm$$2.2s wes obtained for the previously identified isotope $$^{166}$$Tb. The half-lives measured in the present study are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions calculated by the second generation of the gross theory with the atomic masses evaluated by the Audei and Wapstra.

Microscopic theory of multipole ordering in NpO$$_2$$

In order to examine the mysterious ordered phase of NpO$$_2$$ from a microscopic viewpoint, we investigate an $$f$$-electron model on an fcc lattice constructed based on a $$j$$-$$j$$ coupling scheme. First, an effective model with multipole interactions is derived in the strong-coupling limit. Numerical analysis of the model clearly indicates that the interactions for $$Gamma_{4u}$$ and $$Gamma_{5u}$$ moments are relevant to the ground state. Then, by applying mean-field theory to the simplified model including only such interactions, we conclude that longitudinal triple-$$q$$ $$Gamma_{5u}$$ octupole order is realized in NpO$$_2$$ through the combined effects of multipole interactions and anisotropy of the $$Gamma_{5u}$$ moment.
